Conservation
and Raptor Open
House |
The Southwestern High School Conservation and Raptor Rehabilitation Program has once again soared the skies with the seventh annual Raptor Open help on Saturday, September 29, 2008.
The Raptor Open House was a day filled with food, fun, and learning. Once again, the Open House was a success with hundreds of people in attendance. In fact, the yearly Raptor Open House has not only captivated the attention of audiences in Pulaski County and Kentucky, but the whole nation!
The Raptor Open House leads the way in outstanding, top quality. Featuring about ten raptors from diverse habitats at each presentation, the program was able to showcase an array of eagles, hawks, and owls. Besides hosting two outdoor presentations about the birds, the Open House also offered the public guided tours of the facility. This included the onsite greenhouse, flight cage, and a second guided tour down the nature trail down an amphitheater.
The Southwestern High School Raptor program began in 1993 by renown science teacher, Mrs. Francis Carter. Since its modest days thirteen years ago, the program has flown to new heights becoming the only raptor facility in the country served only by its student members! Through the year, the program brings expertise in raptor rehabilitation and environmental awareness through educational presentations. The program is firmly rooted in its conservation title by lending its services to educational enhancements like trail managements, recycling, water testing and community-wide environmental projects.
The Southwestern High School Conservation and Raptor Rehabilitation Program extends its deepest gratitude to both those that donated supplies and the public who made this year's Open House a success.
